For this stage we propose the following:
This stage is 3 days long.
The two first days the students will be in the school library so they
have access to newpapers, books, magazines and computers and other
resources useful for their research. On the third day, students will
work in the computer room, uploading their posts and looking at the
other students posts.
Our aim
is to help them learn about women's achievements throughout history,
make our students aware of gender inequality and ways to prevent it and
to make them develop a critical attitude towards gender inequalty.
The students will be divided into 5 groups of 4 people
and each group will receive a topic to develop as listed below. Each
group will have different tasks and will be divided in pairs (it is up
to the students to divide themselves in pairs). They have to upload their work to a blog created for the class (which, ideally, will be used all the year).
Teachers will be evaluating two main tasks:
- the compositions and pieces of information produced by the students. Grammar, use of vocabulary and content will considered as main points. Use of images, videos or other media will be taken into account as positive. (As said, to be uploaded to the blog)
- afterwards, to ensure the students do read their colleagues posts, each work pair has to write a short text where they choose three entries other than the ones they wrote (the most creative, the most striking and the best organized) and give two reasons for each (about 200 words). Grammar and argumentation will be the main points taken into account by the teachers. (Students will have to hand in this assignment, not upload it to the blog)
1. About ourselves (4 students divided in pairs)
What were your favourite games as a kid? Do you find any differences in the games girls and boys used to play? Look at these images. (300 words)- These are the results of the survey in the motivation phase. Design a graphic and write your answer to this question: have we reached equality? Take into account the results from the survey and look at these pictures (300 words).
2. Organisations working for gender equality (4 students divided in pairs)
- There are several organizations working on achieving gender equality all over the world. Here are two examples: Barefoot College and Mona Foundation. Each pair should work with one organization and check their particular objectives, the countries where they work, their history, their achievements up to date and other interesting facts about them. You can also include their profiles in social media and pictures or videos.
3. Women stand up for their rights! (4 students working individually)
This activity does a review on some of the turning points in the history of women rights. Each student should choose one of the following topics and write a composition on it. (200 words each member)
- Women's suffrage. Which was the first country to allow women to vote? Which ones followed? Is there any nation in which women can't vote yet? Is it fair?
- Propaganda on women's rights. Search for images of propaganda on women's rights and write about them. What do you think about them? Here is an example:
- Access to the pill and abortion.
- Women and access to university. Were women allowed in university long ago?
Or is it just a new event? How were women seen in that time and how are
they seen now? How many women went to university and how many go to
university now?
4. Advertisements that show gender inequality (4 students divided in pairs)
Here are two videos about women and inequality in advertising. Each pair has to choose one video and answer the following questions: where can we notice inequality? What shocked you the most about the video? How can we appreciate this inequality in everyday life? How does it affect us? (200 words for each video).

5. Suggestions for a future with equality (4 students divided in pairs)
Each pair should create a decalogue with the rules we have to follow to live in equality in the future.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST!
Now it is your turn to look at your colleagues posts and choose three of them, the most creative post, the most striking one and the best organized. Give two reasons for each choice in about 200 words.
We hope that you learned new things about gender equality and that we are one step closer to equality!
I love your project. I'm very interested in adverts that show gender inequality, so topic number 4 is my favourite. I think that most people don't even realise that women and men are portrayed differently.
